Practical Platooning NOT for Dummies!

Post  Rancidpunk on Tue Mar 05, 2013 3:02 am

Hi all,
Tomorrow I want to start platooning with two volunteers for a couple of hours each evening with a view to training some platoon commanders ready for Team Companies in a week or two.

We'll be concentrating on low to middle tiers for the moment purely so that we can include everyone who wants to play in the TC's.

Any type of vehicle is welcome, we work our tactics around what you have and enjoy playing.

First few games I will be PC and once we learn to work together we'll swap command each game. Whatever happens with MM, noobs etc. the win is our platoon's responsibility and a loss is a failure on our part, no excuses.

Here are a few of the things we'll be looking at but by no means all:

1.I want us all to learn to spend the 30 second countdown not bitching about matchmaking or having family/village/clan/national reunions etc. but looking at;

a. Which of our tanks are deployed where on the spawn and working out possible scenarios for our platoon,

b. Fluid tactics - Working on the principle that the rest of the team are likely to do the most obvious thing plan how we can react to changing situations as a platoon in the best interests of the team whatever they do.
This means taking into account terrain, fields of fire, cover points, campers, scouts etc. etc. all in 30 seconds and still position your platoon to be ready to exploit any weaknesses at the right time with the right tank.

So a lot to think about and a lot to rethink once the human factor comes into play once the battle starts Smile

2.Once engaged with the enemy we'll be learning to work together to concentrate fire. Personally I like to have a less strict platoons while defending/at range that can use individual initiative but still stick to the basic plan.
Once we go on the attack it's purely down to following the lead tank until he is dead or victorious!

I could go on for pages but I won't, best way to learn is in battle so sign up here and if we get enough interest we can give a countdown for other platoons to click battle at the same time, usually get at least one in the same game so more can join in. Smile

Make sure you are on TS3 but keep the chatter to zero, learn to use your ctrl click on the minimap and keep voice comms to a minimum. If it needs that much explaining it's either too late or impossible! Rolling Eyes

Just one thought. Why keep TS comms to minimum? I find it very useful myself. Easy to tell what target you're focusing on, when you're pushing, retreating, reloading etc. where the enemy is aiming, where to go... I could go on forever. Only time I don't use a lot of TS is when I platoon with someone who's playstyle I know already as then I can predict what they do.

Mainly because nobody can shut up and listen Laughing

Seriously though, the comms are useful for tactical stuff like "watch the med rush on the left!" kind of thing but for platoon the keyboard shortcuts can say all that's needed to fight effectively and leave the comms clear for the platoon commander. Good practice for later on in companies when only the commanders should be talking.

I also think voice comms...while useful, is a bit impractical considering most of the time when you're playing this game you are doing it without voice comms. Students should learn to play without the need for voice communication lest they become reliant on it and hence reliant only on SGTA members who knows how to use voice comms.. Just my 2 cents.

Hey Rancid, sounds good!

What times are you likely to be doing this?

If I am around and able would love to give it a try, used to FC a bit in EvE online but that was a few years ago now so very ropey I dare say.

evenings are not good for me as I platoon with BadGene616. I will have a word with him and see if he is up for this and maybe we can join you together. Otherwise if you can do a daytime slot that would be perfect for me.

This sounds interesting, though I don't think I know the maps nearly well enough yet to be able to make proper plans on the fly, sadly.

sign me up if possible, haven't ever platooned yet but i like the idea of being in random matches with people i know, are good and at least try Smile plus i think the lesson could help teach me. makes me think of those random games where about 13 players go straight up one side of the map and still get killed.. then there is you and 1 or 2 others left to protect the flanks Sad

b. Fluid tactics - Working on the principle that the rest of the team are likely to do the most obvious thing

Die and then flame the rest of the team?

Just turn up if you want to platoon, it's nothing too intense, just normal platooning really at whatever tier you've got.
I was playing in my tier 3 Brit TD last night and have discovered that it takes damage from a sparrow farting within 5 metres so had to adjust for that and things eventually got better!

Anyway, all the guys I've been platooning with this week are well above the skill level of the average random clowns and as platoons we've had some good games where we've managed to make the difference between a win or loss. Even the tragic teams we've been with where a loss is unavoidable we've given a good show of ourselves.

I'm taking for granted individual abilities now and aiming more at learning how to use our platoons to win games, hopefully we'll get enough on at the weekend to have some team company fun and throw a few of you in at the deep end commanding the platoons (and the whole company if you fancy it!).

I am definitely on again tonight, and I hope I'll be able to join this weekend as well. Mostly in platoon, but if I feel confident I guess I could try my leadership skills in a few TC's as well.

I'll be on but not before 10 pm - I wish my kids went to bed earlier!

I can also generally platoon weekdays 9-3pm if you are around.

Cheers LT

Played a few toons with Steel recently he's a great player.

You don't have to have unicum level stats to be a valuable team member, in fact I know a lot of 'unicums' who are complete tossers only interested in their stats and not their teammates.
